Showing Which Teams Have the Best Win-Loss Records Considering Their Schedules—to Date

Georgia Is #4, but OU Is the #4 Non-Runner-Up

Bowl Championship Splendor

  • Georgia has gone 11-2 versus the nation’s toughest schedule to date and has earned the #4 ranking based on teams’ win-loss records considering their schedules
  • Georgia has played more games versus the current top-25 (6) than Oklahoma and Ohio State have played combined (5), and the Bulldogs have played none of those 6 games at home
  • However, the top 4 conference champions or independents are #1 Alabama, #2 Notre Dame, #3 Clemson, and #5 Oklahoma, so if the 4th playoff spot should be reserved for a conference champion or independent—in the interest of rewarding conference championships and ensuring regional variation—then the #5 Sooners should get the nod over the #4 Bulldogs
  • #6 Ohio State is almost neck-and-neck with Oklahoma, trailing the Sooners by just .001, so the Buckeyes and Sooners are essentially equally deserving of a playoff berth
  • The largest gap between any two teams in the rankings is between #8 Michigan and #9 LSU (a .043 gap), while the gap between #3 Clemson and #4 Georgia is also quite large (.025)
  • The SEC has 9 teams in the current top-25; the Pac-12, Big Ten, and Big 12 each have 3; and the ACC, American Athletic, and Mountain West each have 2
  • Rose Bowl-bound Washington has risen 27 spots (from #41 to #14) over the past 5 weeks, beating 3 current-top-30 teams along the way

The Anderson & Hester Rankings are distinct in four ways:

1. Unlike the polls, these rankings do not reward teams for running up scores.  Teams are rewarded for beating quality opponents, which is the object of the game.  Posting large margins of victory, which is not the object of the game, is not considered.

2. Unlike the polls, these rankings do not prejudge teams.  These rankings first appear after the season's sixth week, and each team's ranking reflects its actual accomplishments — on the field, to date — not its perceived potential.

3. These rankings compute the most accurate strength of schedule ratings.  Each team's opponents and opponents' opponents are judged not only by their won-lost records but also, uniquely, by their conferences' strength (see #4).

4. These rankings provide the most accurate conference ratings.  Each conference is rated according to its non-conference won-lost record and the difficulty of its non-conference schedule.
