Part of the BCS Throughout Its Entire 16-Year Run...

Showing Which Teams Have the Best Win-Loss Records Considering Their Schedules — to Date

A Bad Week for the SEC, One Week to Go

Vindicating the BCS

Bowl Championship Splendor

  • Undefeated Florida State has clearly earned the #1 ranking at this point, based on accomplishments to date — but playing #12 Georgia Tech on a neutral field might be the Seminoles’ toughest game so far this season
  • On the heels of the SEC’s 0-4 week in non-conference play, Oregon edges Alabama by .003 to move into the #2 spot, despite the Crimson Tide’s win over current-#19 Auburn
  • There is a big gap (.018) between #3 Alabama and #4 Ohio State, but very little separation between the #4 Buckeyes (.780), #5 TCU (.778), and #6 Arizona (.773)
  • Overlooked Arizona joins Florida State, Oregon, Alabama, and TCU as the only five teams with a winning record versus the current top-25 and a perfect record otherwise
  • The SEC continues to be the #1 conference, but the .033 lead that it held over the #2 Pac-12 last week has now closed to just .009
  • The ACC is now in nearly a dead-heat with the Big 12 and Big Ten (as those three conferences are separated by only .003), with all three being more than .050 behind the Pac-12
  • Every team in the SEC East has now lost a non-conference game; no team in the SEC West has yet lost a non-conference game

The Anderson & Hester Rankings are distinct in four ways:

1. Unlike the polls, these rankings do not reward teams for running up scores.  Teams are rewarded for beating quality opponents, which is the object of the game.  Posting large margins of victory, which is not the object of the game, is not considered.

2. Unlike the polls, these rankings do not prejudge teams.  These rankings first appear after the season's sixth week, and each team's ranking reflects its actual accomplishments — on the field, to date — not its perceived potential.

3. These rankings compute the most accurate strength of schedule ratings.  Each team's opponents and opponents' opponents are judged not only by their won-lost records but also, uniquely, by their conferences' strength (see #4).

4. These rankings provide the most accurate conference ratings.  Each conference is rated according to its non-conference won-lost record and the difficulty of its non-conference schedule.
