Showing Which Teams Have the Best Win-Loss Records Considering Their Schedules — to Date

Alabama Moves to #1

Vindicating the BCS

Bowl Championship Splendor

  • Alabama edges Florida State for the top spot
  • It's an indication of how there doesn't seem to be a standout team this season that neither the #1 or #2 team has a winning record versus the current top-25
  • Alabama is ranked #1 largely on the strength of having won 4 road or neutral-site games versus teams currently ranked between #26-40 (compared to 2 for #2 Florida St. and none for #3 Oregon)
  • The top-4 is pretty clear right now, as #5 TCU is equidistant (.015 separation either way) from #4 Mississippi State and #8 Ole Miss
  • #14 Baylor, perhaps the most overrated team in the polls based on accomplishments to date, is an impressive 2-0 versus the current top-25 but is only 1-1 (with a loss at #31 West Virginia and a win at #40 Texas) versus the rest of the current top-90 — as 5 of the Bears' wins are versus teams that are either ranked outside of the current top-90 or are non-FBS
  • Half of the top-10 is from the SEC, and the entire SEC West is in the top-40, as the SEC is enjoying its finest season (.687 conference ranking) since the 20th century, while the Pac-12 is the clear #2 conference

The Anderson & Hester Rankings are distinct in four ways:

1. Unlike the polls, these rankings do not reward teams for running up scores.  Teams are rewarded for beating quality opponents, which is the object of the game.  Posting large margins of victory, which is not the object of the game, is not considered.

2. Unlike the polls, these rankings do not prejudge teams.  These rankings first appear after the season's sixth week, and each team's ranking reflects its actual accomplishments — on the field, to date — not its perceived potential.

3. These rankings compute the most accurate strength of schedule ratings.  Each team's opponents and opponents' opponents are judged not only by their won-lost records but also, uniquely, by their conferences' strength (see #4).

4. These rankings provide the most accurate conference ratings.  Each conference is rated according to its non-conference won-lost record and the difficulty of its non-conference schedule.
