Showing Which Teams Have Accomplished the Most — to Date

A Trio of Top Teams

  • Three teams soared far above the rest this season, with LSU edging Oklahoma State for the #1 spot and Alabama finishing a relatively close #3
  • Despite its one-trip-across-midfield performance in the BCS National Championship Game, LSU still accomplished the most of any team this season, beating #4 Arkansas, #9 Oregon, #15 Georgia, #21 West Virginia, and #25 Auburn, and going 1-1 versus #3 Alabama (with neither game at home)
  • #2 Oklahoma St. matched LSU's nation-leading tally of 6 wins versus the final top-25, beating #5 Oklahoma, #7 Kansas St., #8 Baylor, #13 Stanford, #16 Texas, and #24 Missouri, while losing at #36 Iowa St.
  • #3 Alabama won 3 games versus the final top-25, beating #4 Arkansas and #25 Auburn and going 1-1 versus #1 LSU (once at home, once at a neutral site)
  • Showing the separation between the top-3 and everyone else, the largest gap in the entire rankings (.034) is between #3 Alabama and #4 Arkansas — while #5 Oklahoma is closer to #15 Georgia (which trails the Sooners by .058) than to #3 Alabama (which leads the Sooners by .059)
  • The SEC posted a higher conference rating (.645) than any conference in the previous 5 seasons, but the Big 12 did even better, posting a .700 rating — the highest conference mark in the BCS era and the first .700 rating since the SEC's .737 rating in 1997-98 (the record)
  • The Big 12 won 90 percent of its non-conference games in the regular season and went 6-2 in the bowls
  • The top 8 teams are all from either the Big 12 or SEC

The Anderson & Hester Rankings are distinct in four ways:

1. Unlike the polls, these rankings do not reward teams for running up scores.  Teams are rewarded for beating quality opponents, which is the object of the game.  Posting large margins of victory, which is not the object of the game, is not considered.

2. Unlike the polls, these rankings do not prejudge teams.  These rankings first appear after the season's fifth week, and each team's ranking reflects its actual accomplishments — on the field, to date — not its perceived potential.

3. These rankings compute the most accurate strength of schedule ratings.  Each team's opponents and opponents' opponents are judged not only by their won-lost records but also, uniquely, by their conferences' strength (see #4).

4. These rankings provide the most accurate conference ratings.  Each conference is rated according to its non-conference won-lost record and the difficulty of its non-conference schedule.
