Showing Which Teams Have Accomplished the Most — to Date

LSU Widens Its Lead

  • With one week to go in the regular season, the teams that have accomplished the most to date are LSU, Oklahoma St., Alabama, Stanford, and Houston
  • There are big gaps (at least .020 in each case) between each of the top-4 teams — in fact, #4 Stanford's rating is actually closer to that of #10 Arkansas (Stanford leads the Razorbacks by .019) than to that of #3 Alabama (which leads the Cardinal by .020)
  • None of the top-5 teams has lost to a team currently ranked outside of the top-30 — versus the current top-30, LSU is 5-0, Oklahoma St. is 5-1, Alabama is 3-1, Stanford is 2-1, and Houston is 0-0 (the undefeated Cougars, however, did win at #31 Tulsa)
  • Despite having posted just a .500 record (6-6) Texas A&M is #25 — all 6 of the Aggies' losses have been to teams that are currently ranked ahead of them (4 of which are currently in the top-10)
  • The 18 toughest schedules in the nation have all been played by Big 12 or SEC teams
  • The BCS is a major reason why college football has by far the best regular season in all of sports, and the final week of the regular season will feature 5 more top-25 matchups: #2 Oklahoma St. vs. #6 Oklahoma; #1 LSU vs. #14 Georgia; #18 Michigan St. vs. #20 Wisconsin; #8 Virginia Tech vs. #23 Clemson; and #17 Texas at #15 Baylor

The Anderson & Hester Rankings are distinct in four ways:

1. Unlike the polls, these rankings do not reward teams for running up scores.  Teams are rewarded for beating quality opponents, which is the object of the game.  Posting large margins of victory, which is not the object of the game, is not considered.

2. Unlike the polls, these rankings do not prejudge teams.  These rankings first appear after the season's fifth week, and each team's ranking reflects its actual accomplishments — on the field, to date — not its perceived potential.

3. These rankings compute the most accurate strength of schedule ratings.  Each team's opponents and opponents' opponents are judged not only by their won-lost records but also, uniquely, by their conferences' strength (see #4).

4. These rankings provide the most accurate conference ratings.  Each conference is rated according to its non-conference won-lost record and the difficulty of its non-conference schedule.
