Part of the BCS Throughout Its Entire 16-Year Run...

Showing Which Teams Have the Best Win-Loss Records Considering Their Schedules—to Date

Only 1 Team Ends the Regular Season Undefeated

  • #1 (12-0) Oregon is almost a full game ahead of the rest of the field, as the Ducks would be close to #1 even with a loss, given their schedule
  • The CFP Selection Committee looks poised to pick 4 SEC teams (including the SEC champion) for the playoff, yet only 2 SEC teams are in the current top-10
  • The committee is overrating 2-loss Tennessee (#16 in this week’s Anderson & Hester Rankings), which has only 1 win versus the current top-25 (at home vs. #12 Alabama) and lost to #56 Arkansas
  • Meanwhile, the committee is underrating various Big 12 teams—for example, it had 2-loss BYU (#10 in this week’s Anderson & Hester Rankings) 11 places behind Tennessee last week (#8 to #19), despite BYU’s having played a tougher schedule than the Vols and having handed #5 SMU its only loss, at SMU
  • The Big Ten, meanwhile, deserves to get 4 teams into the playoff field, as it has 4 of the top 7 teams
  • #18 Michigan has played the nation’s toughest schedule, including 4 games versus the current top-10
  • Notre Dame merits the #4 ranking on the basis of its 11-1 record and above-average schedule, but the Irish have played only 1 top-25 team (#25 Louisville)
  • None of the top 5 teams have played a road or neutral-site game against a current .700 team, so they haven’t been all that well-tested

The Anderson & Hester Rankings are distinct in four ways:

1. Unlike the polls, these rankings do not reward teams for running up scores.  Teams are rewarded for beating quality opponents, which is the object of the game.  Posting large margins of victory, which is not the object of the game, is not considered.

2. Unlike the polls, these rankings do not prejudge teams.  These rankings first appear after the season’s tenth week, and each team’s ranking reflects its actual accomplishments — on the field, to date — not its perceived potential.

3. These rankings compute the most accurate strength of schedule ratings.  Each team’s opponents and opponents’ opponents are judged not only by their won-lost records but also, uniquely, by their conferences’ strength (see #4).

4. These rankings provide the most accurate conference ratings.  Each conference is rated according to its non-conference won-lost record and the difficulty of its non-conference schedule.
