Sooners Idly Capitalize on Irish Foes' Woes
  • Upsets of Notre Dame's two best previous opponents (Michigan & Air Force), combined with strong wins by Oklahoma's two best opponents (Texas & Alabama), vault the idle Sooners over Notre Dame, despite Notre Dame's very impressive win over Florida St.
  • Last week, Notre Dame had beaten #8 & #15 (Michigan & Air Force), while Oklahoma had beaten #13 & #16 (Texas & Alabama); this week, Oklahoma has beaten #7 & #12 (Texas & Alabama, which beat Iowa St. & Tennessee, respectively), while Notre Dame has beaten #13 & #14 (Michigan, which lost to Iowa, & Florida St.)
  • The Irish were particularly hurt by Air Force's Navy-like loss to #98 Wyoming, which sank the Falcons from #15 to #37
  • Miami, whose accomplishments merit the #5 ranking, nevertheless can't match the accomplishments either of Oklahoma (3 wins vs. current top-20 teams, 5 wins vs. above-average teams) or Notre Dame (2 and 7); the Hurricanes have only 1 top-20 win (vs. #14 Florida St.) and 4 wins vs. above-average foes
  • This is not to say that Miami couldn't beat Oklahoma or Notre Dame (nor that it could), only to say that the Hurricanes' accomplishments to date aren't as great
  • Memo to Sally Jenkins at The Washington Post:  the fact that Miami has a 29-game winning streak does not mean the Hurricanes are 29-0 this season

The Anderson & Hester Rankings are distinct in four ways:

1. These rankings do not reward teams for running up scores.  Teams are rewarded for beating quality opponents, which is the object of the game.  Margin of victory, which is not the object of the game, is not considered.

2. Unlike the A.P. and coaches' polls, these rankings do not prejudge teams.  These rankings first appear after the season's fifth week, and each team's ranking reflects its actual accomplishments on the field, not its perceived potential.

3. These rankings compute the most accurate strength of schedule ratings.  Each team's opponents and opponents' opponents are judged not only by their won-lost records but also, uniquely, by their conferences' strength (see #4).

4. These rankings provide the most accurate conference ratings.  Each conference is rated according to its non-conference won-lost record and the difficulty of its non-conference schedule.
