Indiana Sets New Record with .861 Rating

  • #1 (16-0) Indiana sets the all-time record for the highest end-of-season rating in the Anderson & Hester Rankings (.861), breaking the previous record of .853 set by Georgia in 2022-23
  • The gap between #1 Indiana and #2 Oregon (.071) is the biggest season-ending gap between #1 and #2 in the 32-year history of the Anderson & Hester Rankings

  • The Hoosiers posted a 5-0 record versus the season-ending top-15 (4-0 vs. the top-8), playing 4 of those game at neutral sites and 1 on the road
  • Miami, the highest-ranked 3-loss team, rose 9 spots (from #17 to #8) on the strength of its run to the championship game, and the Hurricanes fared better than any team but Indiana against the season-ending top-10 (4-1), but they had more losses to non-top-25 teams (2) than the rest of the top-10 combined (1)
  • (11-2) Navy finished at #18
  • The 3 highest-ranked teams were all from the Big Ten (10-4 in the bowls/playoff as a conference), which during the bowl season overtook the SEC (2-8 in the bowls/playoff) as the top conference

The Anderson & Hester Rankings are distinct in four ways:

1. Unlike the polls, these rankings do not reward teams for running up scores.  Teams are rewarded for beating quality opponents, which is the object of the game.  Posting large margins of victory, which is not the object of the game, is not considered.

2. Unlike the polls, these rankings do not prejudge teams.  These rankings first appear after the season’s twelfth week, and each team’s ranking reflects its actual accomplishments — on the field, to date — not its perceived potential.

3. These rankings compute the most accurate strength of schedule ratings.  Each team’s opponents and opponents’ opponents are judged not only by their won-lost records but also, uniquely, by their conferences’ strength (see #4).

4. These rankings provide the most accurate conference ratings.  Each conference is rated according to its non-conference won-lost record and the difficulty of its non-conference schedule.
